CAMP – Matik Belay Device

Introduction

One of the more expensive assisted braking devices on the market but with good reason, the Camp Matik is a an evolution of the Grigri style belay devices, with clever design features to provide a softer catch and additional safety.

One of the concerns with the Grigri, which has been the cause of several accidents is that if the user panics whilst using the handle to descend or whilst lowering a climber, they are required to release the handle fully to re-engage the braking sadly some people when worried don’t do this and pull the handle harder, allowing the rope to run through uncontrollably with the obvious painful consequences. The Camp Matik is ingenious in that it’s special design means that in the case of a panicked user pulling the handle wide open the design locks up fully, preventing the rope running through the device and ensuring user/lowered climber safety.

Whilst a bit more money, the additional safety features and the softer catch make the Matik well worth considering.

Usable for ropes from 8.6-10.2 mm in diameter the Matik is able to handle Edelrid’s ultra thin 8.6mm Corbiesports rope.
